Racer Snake
(Coluber Constrictor)
Taking a practice hike in preparation for County Park's "Healthy Trails" program ---
I chanced upon a Racer Snake stretched out sunning itself on the trail.
I approached it cautiously while continuously taking pictures.
Racers usually slither away instantly at the sight of a human.
This one seemed loathe to leave its place in the sun.
Facing into the sun, the snake's drab olive / tan coloration blends with its background.
What huge eyes, wide-hinged mouth this creature has.
As I edged closer, the snake began to take notice of me.
Ever so slowly it raised its head and turned to face me.
At this point the thought occurred to me that the snake was about to strike.
But instead, in a flash it whipped around and instantly disappeared into trailside grasses.
